This title was the first game to apply convincing 3D graphics to a flight sim on any console. Its major competition at the time of its release was the 32X title Virtua Racer, but StarFox basically continued what Mario Kart had started in ensuring the Super Nintendo's supremecy in the 16 bit market. The levels are linear, and the player is not actually given the freedom of movement that the 3D graphics suggest. It is nonetheless a great experience due to unique bosses and an absorbing musical score, as well as reasonable player controls and big- BIG- explosions! It may look slightly dated now, but the game itself is sound, and is very much recommended now that emulators have finally managed to emulate the FX chip that is at the heart of the game. |
